Abstraction I

Miguel Ángel Couret Hernández’s practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, and mixed media, developing a visual language in which observation of Cuban reality intersects with symbolism, irony, and imagination. Drawing occupies a fundamental place within his work, providing the structural foundation for compositions that frequently move between the recognizable and the fantastical.

His figures and narrative situations often inhabit unstable or ambiguous environments, where balance, tension, uncertainty, and transformation become recurring ideas. Through these images, Couret approaches individual and collective experience without seeking literal representation, using metaphor and visual contradiction to open spaces for reflection on contemporary life.

Across different bodies of work, everyday references are transformed through expressive distortion, collage, and symbolic association. This combination allows Couret to construct an imagery that remains connected to Cuban social and cultural experience while extending beyond the local toward broader questions of vulnerability, resilience, identity, and the human condition.
