Sinecio Cuétara Menecia’s practice is rooted in a sustained engagement with Cuban artistic tradition, while developing a personal visual language in which architecture, landscape, the human figure, and imagined environments frequently intersect. His work moves between figuration and more abstract forms of construction, transforming familiar spaces into subjective and often poetic territories.

Color occupies a fundamental place within his painting. Through carefully modulated tonal relationships, expressive brushwork, texture, and atmospheric contrasts, Cuétara constructs compositions in which physical space becomes inseparable from memory and perception. Urban structures and architectural fragments often function not simply as representations of place, but as frameworks through which ideas of belonging, transformation, and human experience can emerge.

Drawing from the legacy of nineteenth-century Cuban painting, the twentieth-century Cuban avant-garde, and contemporary artistic practices, Cuétara approaches tradition as a continuously evolving language rather than a fixed inheritance. His work establishes a dialogue between cultural memory and contemporary experience, inviting the viewer to reconsider familiar forms through changing personal, social, and historical perspectives.

BIOGRAPHY

Sinecio Cuétara Menecia (b. 1967, Pinar del Río, Cuba) is a Cuban painter and sculptor whose practice has developed through a sustained engagement with painting, design, and the visual traditions of Cuban art. He studied at the Elementary School of Visual Arts in Pinar del Río and earned a degree in Art Education from the Enrique José Varona Higher Pedagogical Institute in Havana in 1991.

Alongside his studio practice, Cuétara worked as a designer and decorator from 1992 to 2003, an experience that contributed to his continuing interest in spatial construction, architecture, color, and composition. Since the late 1980s, he has maintained an active exhibition career, presenting solo exhibitions in Cuba and internationally and participating in numerous collective projects.

His work has been exhibited in Cuba, Mexico, Panama, South Korea, Spain, Puerto Rico, and the United States, among other international contexts. His exhibition history includes projects associated with several editions of the Havana Biennial, as well as presentations at galleries, museums, cultural institutions, and international art events.

Throughout his career, Cuétara has continued to explore the relationship between Cuban pictorial tradition and contemporary experience. Moving across landscape, abstraction, figuration, and architectural imagery, his work reflects an evolving practice shaped by cultural memory, observation, and a sustained investigation of color and space.
