Carlos Guzmán Hernández’s practice unfolds through an imaginative visual universe in which human figures coexist with machines, mechanical devices, flying structures, ropes, gears, architectural forms, and fantastical creatures. Drawing upon painting, drawing, illustration, collage, and mixed media, he constructs meticulously imagined environments where reality and invention continually intersect.

His compositions often evoke an ambiguous sense of time and place. Mechanical forms and dreamlike characters become vehicles for exploring memory, solitude, communication, human aspiration, and the complex relationship between people and the worlds they create. Nostalgia and wonder coexist with subtle tensions, giving his narratives a poetic quality that moves between the familiar and the improbable.

Throughout his work, Guzmán transforms storytelling into a visual language of its own. Rather than illustrating fixed narratives, his paintings invite viewers into open-ended worlds shaped by imagination, symbolism, and memory spaces where machines can appear almost human and ordinary experience gives way to the marvelous.

BIOGRAPHY

Carlos Guzmán Hernández (b. 1970, Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing, illustration, collage, sculpture, and mixed media. He began his artistic training at the Paulita Concepción Elementary Visual Arts School, graduating in 1985, and continued his studies at the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, where he graduated in 1989.

Alongside his studio practice, Guzmán has taught drawing, illustration, and costume design at institutions in Havana, including the Higher Institute of Industrial Design and the Higher Institute of Art. Over several decades, he has developed an extensive exhibition history in Cuba and internationally, presenting solo exhibitions and participating in group exhibitions across the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the United States.

His work has been presented in exhibitions in Havana, Miami, Paris, Porto, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint-Martin, and other international contexts. He has also participated in editions of the Havana Biennial and in Subasta Habana, while his broader exhibition history reflects a sustained presence in contemporary Cuban art since the late 1980s.

Throughout his career, Guzmán has maintained a multidisciplinary approach in which painting and drawing remain central while extending into collage, sculpture, installation, and other forms of visual experimentation. His distinctive narrative vocabulary has established an imaginative body of work that moves between memory, fantasy, symbolism, and reflections on the human condition.
