Borges Reimagined: When Latin American Art Meets Literature

Roselle Gallery pays tribute to Jorge Luis Borges through contemporary art at the Argentine-Latin American Film & Art Festival in South Florida.

September 2026 | Exhibitions & Events

Literature and visual art have long shared a fascination with the mysteries of human existence. Memory, identity, time, infinity, and imagination transcend the boundaries of language, finding new expressions through images, forms, and colors.

In September 2026, Roselle Gallery brought these worlds together through Borges Reimagined, a special artistic tribute to Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, presented as part of the Argentine-Latin American Film & Art Festival at Nova Southeastern University in South Florida.

Marking forty years since Borges's passing, the exhibition invited audiences to discover how his literary universe continues to inspire contemporary Latin American artists.

Rather than illustrating his writings, the participating artists approached Borges as a source of creative exploration, transforming literary ideas into deeply personal visual narratives.

A Dialogue Between Literature and Painting

Few writers have explored the relationship between reality and imagination with the depth and originality of Jorge Luis Borges.

His literary universe, inhabited by mirrors, labyrinths, dreams, infinite possibilities, and the mysteries of time, continues to resonate across artistic disciplines.

For Roselle Gallery, the tribute offered an opportunity to explore the enduring connections between literature and contemporary Latin American art.

Through different artistic languages, Esteban Machado Díaz, Carlos Guzmán, and Ileana Mulet engaged with Borges's ideas, creating works that move beyond literary references to establish an independent visual dialogue with his legacy.

Each artist approached this encounter from a distinct perspective, revealing the richness and diversity of contemporary artistic interpretations.

Esteban Machado Díaz: Between Reflection, Time, and the Infinite

Cuban artist Esteban Machado Díaz contributed two monumental paintings inspired by Borges's poetry: The Iron Coin (La moneda de hierro) and Chess (El ajedrez).

In The Iron Coin, Machado Díaz explores the complex relationship between identity, reflection, temptation, and the cosmos.

A faceless figure stands before a mirror that becomes a threshold between the visible and the imagined. Within this symbolic space, references to Paradise, human existence, and celestial bodies unfold in a composition that connects the intimate with the universal.

The painting does not seek to reproduce Borges's poem. Instead, it transforms the writer's philosophical questions into a visual narrative shaped by the artist's imagination and personal symbolism.

In Chess, Machado Díaz turns the familiar game into a meditation on existence, duality, and the passage of time.

Two queens, one black and one white, inhabit contrasting symbolic worlds. Elements of land and sea intersect across a chessboard that becomes more than a playing surface: it emerges as a metaphor for the invisible forces governing human experience.

Together, these works demonstrate the artist's ability to translate literary inspiration into a distinctive pictorial language.

Ileana Mulet: The Fragility of Time

In Hourglass (Reloj de arena), Cuban artist Ileana Mulet approaches one of Borges's most persistent concerns: the passage of time.

Inspired by the writer's poem of the same name, the work evokes the delicate relationship between memory, transience, and human existence.

Through her characteristic exploration of textures and painting, Mulet creates a visual reflection on time as both a measurable phenomenon and an elusive experience.

Her interpretation invites viewers to contemplate the moments that shape our lives and the traces they leave behind.

Carlos Guzmán: Memory, Imagination, and Human Connection

With Essential Bond (Vínculo esencial), Cuban artist Carlos Guzmán offers a symbolic meditation on the relationship between literature, memory, and the continuity of human thought.

The figure of Borges appears within a composition populated by images of transformation, creativity, and renewal.

A butterfly suggests metamorphosis, while mechanical elements evoke the intricate workings of memory. A female figure, a bird, flowers, and a young reader contribute to a layered narrative in which the written word becomes a bridge between generations.

The painting celebrates literature's capacity to transcend time, connecting past and future through the imagination of those who continue to read and reinterpret it.

Roselle Gallery at the Argentine-Latin American Film & Art Festival

Presented at Nova Southeastern University, the exhibition formed part of a broader cultural encounter celebrating the artistic and intellectual contributions of Latin America.

Alongside the tribute to Borges, Roselle Gallery presented a selection of contemporary works by Arturo Montoto and Alicia de la Campa Pak, expanding the exhibition's visual narrative beyond its literary inspiration.

The presentation brought together five artists whose distinct practices reflect the diversity of contemporary Latin American art.

The festival provided a meaningful setting for this encounter, connecting visual arts with cinema, literature, and cultural exchange.

Roselle Gallery extends its appreciation to the festival's founder, Adriana Bianco, and to Nova Southeastern University for supporting a space where artistic disciplines and cultural perspectives could meet.

Beyond the Written Word

Borges Reimagined was conceived not simply as a tribute to a celebrated writer, but as an exploration of the enduring relationship between artistic disciplines.

Borges's literature does not offer a single interpretation of the world. It opens doors to multiple realities, inviting readers to question what they know and imagine what lies beyond the visible.

The participating artists embraced that same freedom.

Through painting, they transformed literary inspiration into new visual experiences, demonstrating how art can extend the life of ideas beyond their original form.

For Roselle Gallery, the exhibition reflects an ongoing commitment to promoting contemporary Latin American art and creating meaningful encounters between artists, cultural institutions, collectors, and audiences.

Because great literature, like great art, never belongs exclusively to the past. It continues to be rediscovered, questioned, and reimagined by every generation.
